Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s Calls for Ceasefire
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has intensified calls for increased pressure on Russia to agree to an unconditional ceasefire. In his evening address from Kyiv, he noted that the American proposal for a ceasefire has not garnered adequate response from Moscow, potentially delaying peace. Zelenskyy emphasized that genuine pressure could have already resulted in a ceasefire, thanking those nations that have supported Ukraine through sanctions against the Kremlin.
Recent Escalations
He highlighted recent escalations, including over 172 drone attacks in one night, particularly affecting cities like Dnipro, where casualties were reported. Zelenskyy described these attacks as not only assaults on Ukrainian citizens but also a threat to international diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. He stated, „Russia must be forced into peace; only coercion works.“
Rejection of the Ceasefire Proposal
Conversely, Russia has rejected the US-proposed ceasefire that was suggested on March 11, linking its approval to numerous conditions, including:
- Ukraine’s commitment to forego NATO membership
- Recognition of Russian annexed territories, which Ukraine firmly opposes
Tensions remain high, with ongoing accusations from both Ukraine and Russia regarding violations of a previously discussed ceasefire aimed at protecting energy infrastructure, as the war persists for over three years.
Need for Diplomatic Engagement
This urgent situation underscores the need for effective diplomatic engagement and strategic pressure on Russia to facilitate a lasting resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
