Iranian Filmmakers Sentenced
Iranian filmmakers Maryam Moghadam and Behtash Sanaeeha have been sentenced to 14 months in prison due to their film „Keyke mahboobe man“ (translated as „A Little Bit of Cake“), which gained acclaim at the Berlinale 2024.
Charges and Sentencing
- The Tehran Revolutionary Court convicted them of „propaganda against the system.“
- They are required to serve their sentences only in five years.
- A fine was imposed, and their film producer, Gholamresa Mussawi, faces a related one-year sentence for his involvement in producing what authorities deemed „offensive material.“
About the Film
Despite the legal challenges, „Keyke mahboobe man“ tells the poignant story of a 70-year-old widow rediscovering love after her husband’s death.
The filmmakers were unable to present their work at the festival due to travel restrictions. This incident highlights the stringent scrutiny Iran’s cultural scene has faced since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, where filmmakers must navigate complex regulations to obtain necessary permissions for their projects.
