Brown University Student Under Scrutiny
A Brown University student, Alex Shieh, is facing scrutiny from the university after he questioned the role of non-faculty employees and created a website, Bloat@Brown, to investigate employee productivity.
Concerns Raised in Op-Ed
In his op-ed for Pirate Wires, Shieh expressed concern about:
- The university’s high tuition costs, which exceed $93,000
- The $46 million budget deficit
Data Compilation and Inquiry
He compiled data on 3,805 non-faculty employees through publicly available resources and categorized jobs as:
- „DEI jobs“
- „Redundant jobs“
- „Bulls–t jobs“
Shieh used AI tools to rank their roles. His inquiry led to a mass email to the employees, sparking backlash and accusations of causing „emotional harm.“
University’s Response
In response, Brown University has launched an internal review, with concerns over privacy and misrepresentation. The case has drawn attention to larger issues of:
- Administrative expenditure
- Transparency in higher education
Support for Shieh
Shieh is supported by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), arguing that the fear of scrutiny should prompt change. Brown University has stated that it is taking the matter seriously and cannot disclose further details due to privacy laws.
